In my final semester of college, I was hired as a producing intern for KCRG-TV9 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During my time with the station, I grew a lot as a journalist. I worked with different producers several times a week in order to put together the 5 p.m., 6 p.m., and 10 p.m. newscasts on the days I worked. I interned for KCRG from January until early May, and the experience helped enhance my skills. I stacked newscasts, wrote scripts, gathered video and sound for VO/SOT’s, developed graphics, localized national stories, worked in a team environment, but most importantly, I learned from professionals how to produce compelling newscasts. Here are some examples of the work I did during the internship.
Continuing Coverage:
Throughout President Donald Trump’s first 100 days in office we covered numerous stories including the investigation into his National Security Adviser, Michael Flynn. Here is a montage of some of the stories I wrote during the controversy.
President Trump Travel Ban:
President Donald Trump repeatedly promised during the campaign to reform the United States immigration policy. This montage of stories covers the two executive orders he issued that banned immigrants from seven Muslim-majority countries and the impact the order had across Iowa.
Digging deeper into the story:
This story involved a shooting at a gas station in Waterloo, Iowa. The producer and I decided to look further into the story. We discovered other incidents had previously occurred at the same gas station, which added more to the story than just a today angle.
